To promote the physical, mental, and spiritual well being and welfare of the elderly persons suffering from ill-health, disease or accident; the needy persons and people with special needs; without distinction of race, language or creed.
In that same year, Salem Daycare and Rehabilitation Centre for the elderly was established in Yishun (323 Yishun Central, #01-271, Singapore 760323) as a result of this vision. Services at the Centre included physiotherapy, exercise, socio-recreational activities, nursing care and day care facilities. Salem Daycare and Rehabilitation Centre is currently partnered with St Luke’s Elderly care and will reopen its doors after renovations at the end of 2022.
Today, elderly care with its challenges has grown.
The Population Census 2020 publishes that Singapore’s share of the “Aged’s population of 65 years and over”, has seen the highest increase from 9% to 15.2% between year 2010 to 2020. It continues to report that the proportion of households with at least one member aged 65 and above, and the number of seniors living alone, have both increased over the past decade (between 2010 to 2020). The data shows that almost 100,000 residents were unable to or have difficulty performing at least one basic activity of washing or dressing themselves. Of these, 62,500 people had difficulty with mobility- related activities like walking or climbing steps.
