Terrence Wong Fei Yang (b. 1989) graduated from the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts (NAFA), Singapore with a Diploma in Music Performance (Composition) and is currently pursuing his Bachelor of Music under the NAFA-Royal College of Music (RCM) Degree Programme. He studied composition under the tutelage of Dr. Zechariah Goh Toh Chai and Prof. Kenneth Hesketh, as well as conducting with Mr. Lim Yau, Dr. Leonard Tan and Mr. Volker Hartung.
A recipient of the National Arts Council (NAC) Arts Scholarship, Terrence is also the winner of the inaugural Leong Yoon Pin Choral Composition Competition in 2013 for his choral work If There Are Gods, and has been commissioned to compose music for numerous institutions and events including the National Piano and Violin Competition 2013, Singapore Wind Symphony, Singapore Management University (SMU) Symphonia’s 10th Anniversary Concert and Maris Stella Primary School. In particular, Beyond Milestones was selected to be featured at the Asian Composers League (ACL) Conference & Festival 2013 where it was performed by The Philharmonic Winds (Singapore). Another work, Singapura, was performed at the Taiwan International Band Clinic 2013 by the Hsinchu Youth Wind Symphony in Taipei.
As a conductor, Terrence served as the Music Director of Novo Winds from 2010-2011, and also the Associate Conductor of the AudioImage Wind Ensemble in the later part of 2011.
An active performing musician, he performs on and teaches the Euphonium and Trombone. He has a strong passion for the music of the Central Javanese Gamelan, and also performs occasionally on the recorder in Early Music ensembles. He also believes that music composition is a lifelong yet fulfilling process of research, appreciation, creative thinking and performance, and continues to strive towards the perfection of his art with that in mind.
