Singapore Wind Symphony celebrates music by Singapore singer-songwriters! Led by conductor Adrian Tan, this special concert features homegrown stars Nathan Hartono and Joanna Dong. Come sing along to familiar tunes and discover new favourites.

This concert is part of Pops, an Esplanade series of accessible concerts, featuring homegrown symphonic bands and orchestras.

CELEBRATIONS! is SWS launch of our 40th Anniversary and we would like to invite you to join us in this special concert.

The concert features world renown Euphonium soloist Steven Mead as well as Misa Mead and Singapore’s top brass players, Allen Meek and Sergey Tyuteykin.

There will be several original works commissioned by SWS including one that will feature ethnic instruments like Erhu, Tabla and the Gambus.

Renowned composer and conductor Johan de Meij returns to perform in concert with the Singapore Wind Symphony in an exciting program of his newest compositions including “Fellini!” inspired by one of the most influential filmmakers of all time featuring Belgian saxophone virtuoso Hans de Jong and “Spring” based on Swedish folk music, Anthony Flumuta’s “Fantasia Napoletana” & the local premiere of “Malay Dances” by Peter Gale, winner of SWS’ Young Composers’ Challenge 2016.

The SWS will be in Jeju, South Korea for the Jeju International Wind Ensemble Festival 2016, followed by a Friendship Concert with the Sejong Symphonic Wind Orchestra in Seoul, South Korea!
We look forward to sharing the music of our local composers and arrangers to international audiences!

Join Singapore Wind Symphony and guest stars Kevin Mathews, Robin Goh, Donnie Chan, getai veteran Liu Ling Ling and alternative funk rock band uGly iN tHe moRniNg, as we present film music by Dick Lee, Mohamed Raffee, Zubir Said and more, featuring scenes from some of these films, curated by director Eric Khoo.

Presented by the Singapore Wind Symphony, in collaboration with Esplanade – Theatres on the Bay, as part of Pops – a concert series featuring homegrown symphonic band and orchestras.

John Bruce Yeh & The Singapore Wind Symphony Concert

“GRAMMY® Award-winning clarinetist John Bruce Yeh was appointed solo bass clarinet of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra by Sir Georg Solti at the age of 19, and is the longest-serving clarinetist in the CSO’s history. Enjoying an international career as a soloist and a recording artist, he has released more than a dozen recordings that have earned worldwide critical acclaim.

Making his debut with the Singapore Wind Symphony, Yeh performs C.M. von Weber’s “Concertino” and Michael Daugherty’s “Brooklyn Bridge” – a true virtuosic composition for solo clarinet inspired by the stunning views of New York seen from the famous landmark. In addition, he will give the world premiere performances of Daniel Yiau’s “Suite Yokai” for clarinet choir as conductor and as soloist in Benjamin Yeo’s “Chop Suey”, a witty and highly entertaining scherzo specially commissioned by the SWS for John Bruce Yeh.

The program will also include Pulitzer Prize winner Jennifer Higdon’s Percussion Concerto, a dazzling tour de force for percussion soloist featuring renowned local percussionist Iskandar Rashid.”

Singapore Wind Symphony Presents: Diversity

The Singapore Wind Symphony rounds up the season with a reflective program celebrating the nation’s rich diversity featuring solo performances by soprano Akiko Otao & saxophonist Samuel Phua. Renowned Chinese maestro Li Fang Fang will lead the band in Percy Grainger’s masterpiece Lincolnshire Posy & Composer-in-Residence Terrence Wong’s Singapura, and rising Singaporean conductor Lien Boon Hua presents the world premiere of acclaimed composer Emily Koh’s Diverse[city]. In a tribute to Zubir Said, composer of our national anthem, Resident Arranger Mohamad Rasull offers up an original composition based on Semoga Bahagia or “may you achieve happiness” – a wish expressed in the song for all Singaporeans. Each work in the programme has been chosen for embodying diversity in different ways.

As part of Singapore’s golden jubilee, the Singapore Wind Symphony pays tribute to Singapore pop music with our greatest hits performed by some of today’s most exciting local artists! Featuring The Gentle Bones, Wicked Aura, Shun Ng, Sezairi Sezali, Amni Musfirah and Shabir,Made in Singapore takes you down memory lane while offering you a glimpse into today’s vibrant music scene. Highlights include a special arrangement of Wicked Aura’s Fight and Shun Ng’s tribute to the hit song Shanty by The Quests.

Co-presented with Esplanade – Theatres on the Bay, Singapore Wind Symphony’s Singapore! A Musical Celebration series celebrates our unique music heritage through national songs, musical theatre and jazz, as well as through collaborations with some of our nation’s music icons including Dick Lee and Jeremy Monteiro. Beyond the concerts, these arrangements, specially created by local composers and arrangers for the orchestra, are made available to school, community and professional symphonic bands, so that future generations and audiences have the opportunity to perform and learn about Singapore’s unique brand of music.

Join the SWS this holiday season in a euphonious musical treat with newlyweds Steven & Misa Mead, as they share their love, laughter and incredible virtuosity on the Euphonium with us in the spirit of Christmas!

Englishman Steven Mead needs no introduction to brass enthusiasts as one of the greatest exponents of the Euphonium with an acclaimed solo career that sees him playing in 75 appearances around the world every year. He has give the premiere performances of over 500 major works by some of the wind band’s greatest composers. Born in Japan, multiple award-winning Euphoium soloist Misa Mead is not only a rising star, but is an accomplished composer whose music has been performed around the world. After tying the knot in March earlier this year, the talented duo has wowed audiences on an international performance tour, and decided to spend their first Christmas together with friends and music lovers in Singapore.

As a belated wedding gift, SWS composer-in-residence Terrence Wong presents a new work specially composed for Steven & Misa. As a special treat, Misa will perform as soloist on her new composition “Otemoyan Fantasy for Euphonium & Band” to be given its world premiere here in Singapore! Also expect special guest appearances by SSO Principal Tuba Hidehiro Fujita, prominent local Euphonium players (Mark Glover) & (Kang Chun Meng) and a showstopping (and occasionally LOL funny) selection of virtuoso works and christmas favourites that is guaranteed to put you in the best of holiday spirits!

Joe Burgstaller & the Singapore Wind Symphony

Thrilling audiences the world over with his stunning virtuosity, captivating sensitivity and engaging personality, Trumpeter Joe Burgstaller joins the Singapore Wind Symphony in a special concert featuring the world premiere of Malaysian-born composer Su Lian TAN’s Trumpet Concerto & the young Singaporean composer Jinjun LEE’s Variations on Chan Mali Chan. Formerly the featured trumpeter/arranger of the Canadian Brass, Joe has performed in front of more than 40 orchestras, in more than 50 music festivals and has performed and taught at over 80 universities, consevatories and colleges. His extensive discography includes his solo CDs License to Thrill, The Virtuoso Trumpet and three Top-10 Billboard hits with the Canadian Brass. Joining SWS Music Director Adrian TAN on the podium is renowned Taiwanese conductor Apo HSU, making her debut with the SWS and introducing the music of Taiwanese composer CHUNG Yiu-Kwong.

Singapore! A Musical Celebration was initiated in 2012 by the Singapore Wind Symphony to celebrate Singapore’s rich and diverse popular music heritage. The critically and popularly acclaimed series has since paid tribute to our favourite National Songs with acapella virtuosos Vocaluptous as well as Singapore’s musical theatre scene in collaboration with the inimitable Dick Lee. The third edition of SAMC features Cultural Medallion recipient and living Jazz legend Jeremy Monteiro in an exploration of his life and music, showcasing the world ofSingaporean Jazz.
